Each day as a support worker is unique, filled with different activities and interactions. It's a job that requires flexibility, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others. While the tasks might change, the core of what we do remains the same: supporting our participants to live the life they want to live, how they want to live it. We spoke with one of our Support Workers to see what last Monday looked like for them. First Shift: 9:00am – 12:00pm My day started with a bright and early 9:00am shift. I picked up my first participant from his Supported Independent Living (SIL) home. Our first stop was the bank, where I assisted him in signing some paperwork. Navigating these tasks can sometimes be overwhelming for participants, so it felt good to provide some support and make the process smoother. Next, we headed to the shopping centre. Our first stop was Flight Centre, where we spent some time looking at various travel destinations. My participant is particularly excited about an upcoming cruise, so we chatted about his plans and the places he'd visit. After Flight Centre, we went to Big W where he picked out a travel pillow for his trip. We then spent some time window shopping, enjoying the atmosphere of the shopping centre. Before we knew it, it was nearly noon. I drove him back to his SIL home, and with a wave and a smile, my first shift of the day came to an end. Lunch Break: 12:00pm-1:00pm For lunch, I found a peaceful spot in a nearby park. Sitting in my car, I enjoyed the packed lunch I had brought with me. It was a nice moment of solitude and relaxation amidst a busy day. After eating, I took a quick detour to fill up my car with petrol before heading to my next shift. Second Shift: 1:00pm – 4:00pm My second shift began at 1:00pm when I arrived at my next participant's home. She was ready and eager to do a big grocery shop. We drove to the local supermarket, and I assisted her with her shopping. It was a productive trip, and she managed to get everything she needed. Once we returned to her home, I helped her clean the floors. This kind of assistance is often greatly appreciated, as it can be quite a task for some participants. After tidying up, we started preparing dinner together. By the time 4:00pm rolled around, my participant was settled and ready for the evening ahead. I left her home, feeling fulfilled and grateful for another day of meaningful work. Comments are closed.
